Todoroki Falls

Todoroki Falls is a collection of waterfalls found deep in the mountains of Kaiyo, Tokushima prefecture. The main waterfall, which falls into a basin within a small gorge, is one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, and is the largest in all of the Shikoku region. Depending on the time of year, the falls cast a strong mist into the air that forms a rainbow in the morning sun.

In addition to the main waterfall, Todoroki is made up of a series of waterfalls plentiful enough to be called the “99 Todoroki Waterfalls”

The falls and associated Todoroki shrine have a rich history, and are the site of distinct Shinto festivals and worship. There is both a summer and autumn festival, the latter of which attracts people from across Japan to witness a unique ritual involving carrying a portable shrine into the waterfall’s basin.

While the main falls and shrine are a fairly short walk from the parking area, the other falls require a bit of hiking to access. The entire hike takes around 2 hours round trip at a leisurely pace, and covers close to 1.5km.

Todoroki is accessible via car or the town bus. The town bus takes 55 minutes on the Hirai line (平井線), and departs from JR Awa-Kainan station.
